Ice sculptures return to downtown Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – The weather outside is frightful, but the ice sculptures dotting the landscape in downtown Springfield are sizzling.

For the third year, the carved ice creations can be seen outside city landmarks. They were installed on Thursday, just in time for the first Red Sox Winter Weekend at MGM.

More than a dozen ice sculptures have been placed around the downtown area that will provide an added attraction for thousands of Winter Weekend visitors. Locations include Tower Square and Boland Way, City Hall steps and the MassMutual Center.

There is Wally the Red Sox mascot, a baseball glove and ball, a dog, a pineapple and many more.

People are invited to wander the streets of downtown to hunt out the sculptures and participate in an instagram contest. The Springfield Business Improvement District has a map on its webpage.

The carvings were all done by Joe Almeida of Westfield, who is in his 3rd year supplying sculptures for the show.
