A painting that makes me think of July 4th – The Artsology Blog

With July 4th coming in just a few days, it’s hard to know what exactly will be the situation locally here in NJ, in regards to fireworks, social distancing and everything else going on. With the holiday in mind, I noticed a photograph that I took while gallery-hopping last fall that made me think of fireworks. This painting is titled “Future Skies over Bozeman, Montana Reprise,” 2019, by Hope Gangloff, which I saw in an exhibition of her work at the Susan Inglett Gallery in late November. So while the actual painting is depicting a sky full of bright stars, there was something about it (including the red, white and blue colors) that made me think about fireworks.

Hope Gangloff was born in 1974 in Amityville, NY, and attended The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art. This show at Susan Inglett featured a theme of landscape paintings (a selection of which are shown below), which is a departure from her usual bold portraits of friends, family members, and the occasional stranger. For more on Hope Gangloff, check out her website here.
